The Mid West Wind Farm development highlights from this year include completing most of the environmental studies and design iterations, concluding at present there are no adverse impacts from expanding the wind farm capacity to over 140 turbines. These turbines would be capable of producing over 1 GW of renewable energy.
The project has also commenced transmission line route studies and is assessing options to connect into the South West Interconnected System and / or directly to local loads.
Coming up in 2026, there will be spring surveys undertaken on site and a submission of the Development Application.
Community engagement
The Mid West has been actively engaging with the region throughout the year. Highlights include a site visit by Vestas Development COO, hosting a booth at the Economic Forum in Geraldton, meeting with Yamaji representatives and visiting our colleagues at Walkaway Wind Farm.
As a proud member of the Mid West Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MWCCI), Vestas also attended this year’s final Business After Hours event at Red Dust Holdings (image 1). These gatherings bring local industry together to share insights and celebrate achievements, which is a great opportunity to strengthen connections and acknowledge the collective efforts driving regional growth.
Our commitments go far beyond industry partnerships. Through our 2025 Sponsorship Program, we have invested over $45,000 across 11 local organisations, supporting initiatives that create lasting benefits for the Mid West region. The 2025 investments span across four key areas:
Education & arts
Mental Health & wellbeing
Community & recreation facilities
A key opportunity has been providing opportunities for young women and students in STEM to build confidence and essential skills for the future.
On our team’s most recent visit to the region in December, we saw tangible outcomes of these initiatives in action.
For example, the Docherty Pool in Mullewa (image 2) has been able to remove entry fees this summer with our support. The project team met with the Geraldton council to talk to them about the positive impacts, read more about the pool here.
At Mingenew Primary School, MWWF sponsorship enabled the replacement of an old, worn fence with a new one (image 3). Seen in the photo on the right, the principal stands proudly alongside two of our Vestas team representatives, presenting the newly established fence. As the principal shared, it is incredible how something as simple as a fence can make such a big difference, creating a more welcoming and safe environment for students and staff alike.
It was a pleasure to drop by the Geraldton band practice (image 4) to see how supporting arts and culture is an important part of building vibrant communities.
Visiting the Walkaway community showed us the incredible impact a local facility like the People’s Hall can have. We met with two women from the community who shared how important it is to bring everyone together, especially during festive times. With Vestas’ support, they were able to host a Christmas lunch for the entire town, ordering nearly 200 chickens and decorating the iconic Blue Tree. This event brought joy across generations and strengthened community bonds. Some impressions from this year’s Xmas lunch will be captured soon.
These connections are about sharing project details and ensuring transparency, while also getting to know the dynamics in the region. It has been an absolute pleasure to see that even at this early stage, our project can deliver benefits. Through these actions, Vestas is committed to making a difference not just within the project footprint, but across the towns and communities that make this region thrive.
Keep an eye out for announcements early next year on how to get involved, or you can sign up for updates on this by registering for project updates at the bottom of this page.
